Sucks to be the PR Guy Sometimes

Sometimes you just gotta feel bad for the poor guy (or girl) who has to send our press releases for certain people.  Recently one company sent out a press release and it actually got posted on several major sites including AVN, with tons of flat out false information.  It wasn’t really the PR person’s fault because in the end all that person can do is make the press release with the information given to her by the client.  But because she sent it out like that, she lost credibility.  Now when I see press releases by this person I have to stop and think before posting it and wonder, should I really post this?  Is this information real or legit?

Today another such thing came through my mail.  It was the PR guy for Wicked Pictures.  Each week he has to send out emails about some new movie or what not, each time spelling Jessica Drake’s name “jessica drake”.  While to the rest of the world it looks really stupid and it makes the guy sending out the release look like a dumb ass for not knowing that you capitalize the first letter in someone’s name.  In reality he’s not a dumb ass. he just has to spell it that way because she’s the talent and for whatever reason she feels like she wants her name out there like that.  Of course it’s the PR guy who is sending out the press releases that loses credibility over it because he looks like he’s sending press releases with major typos in it every week.  Most people don’t know it’s the performer in question who is making such idiotic demands.

Wicked Pictures is pleased to introduce jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex: Basic Positions, the latest breakthrough educational release from Wicked Pictures.

I know I personally go out of my way to try and not post press releases when specifically about Jessica Drake just because the whole name thing annoys me to no end.  I just can’t get how she doesn’t get that spelling her name like that is only embarrassing to her.  How does she not get it makes her look stupid?

Why is it we do this with talent / clients?  Why can’t we just go to the person and say listen you look like a dumb ass for spelling your name in all lower case, people are making fun of you behind your back all the time over it …  You focus on doing what you do best, making movies and let the marketing experts do what they do best???

I know she’s the talent and we have to pat her on her little head, put on a fake smile and do what she tells us to do but things in life would sure be a hell of a lot easier if we could just be totally honest all the time.

LOL

Okay /rant off

  2. Hello,

I wanted to say a couple things about your piece “Sucks to be the PR Guys Sometimes.”

One of the things you mention is posted “Recently one company sent out a press release and it actually got posted on several major sites including AVN, with tons of flat out false information. It wasn’t really the PR person’s fault because in the end all that person can do is make the press release with the information given to her by the client.”

Without knowing exactly the press release you are referring to, in general I disagree with that. As a publicist, it’s our job to know the facts. Of course, you take the information given to you by the client, but I know I research further. So that an instance like that won’t happen to me. That’s the mark of a good publicist, in my opinion. Make sure what you are saying is indisputable. Because, like you said, it’s our rep that’s on the line. And I know, for me, that’s worth more than whatever money I would be getting from writing a press release.

You also make mention about the way jessica drake spells her name, with lowercase. I wouldn’t be too harsh about it, I mean iPhone is spelled with a lower case “I,” right?

  3. You know you are right, to some extent the PR person should kinda check some of the facts and if they are wrong, they SHOULD be able to speak up and be like ya this is bullshit I’m not putting this out but let’s be real, you know that doesn’t happen. If a client lies you there ass, what can you really do? Other than not just have that person as a client.

But well let’s take this – a pr person took a product, sent out a press release about it. The product is question turned out to be all stolen videos. So here we have AVN publishing a press release (not realizing it) about a product of nothing but stolen videos. LOL

AVN wasn’t in the wrong, they published what the PR person sent them so in the end they were just trusting the PR person’s information as accurate and ethical and when it turned out not to be, the PR person now lost no doubt major credibility. I guess that’s what I was getting it.

  4. *sigh*

this coming from someone who spells club “klub” and Kelly “Kelli”…
    ; )

look, you don’t know me, but you don’t like me. i get it.
but i promise you, there are WAY more important things in this world to be more upset about than a little j and a little d.

    peace,
    jd (not JD)

  5. Hon it’s not about liking you or not liking you. It’s more about a story about the PR rep who put out a story selling illegally downloaded content and got it posted on AVN.

That PR reps reputation as a result took a major hit. Same in the situation with you. YOU may understand why you want to spell your name like you do, but others who don’t know you the grammatical error and as a direct result, it reflects badly on your PR person whose job it is to make sure every thing in that press release is spelled right and that i is dotted and every t is crossed.

Now YOU may know what your reasons are for your naming preference, but trust me when I say the hundreds and well in some case thousands of people associated with a single press release don’t, nor do they really probably care. All they know is, that to them it’s inappropriately spelled and makes the person sending out the release look uneducated for making such a simple grammatical error.

So again, it has *NOTHING* to do with liking or not liking you. I don’t even know you. So please don’t take it as a personal attack. It’s just simply stating a fact that PR people have to deal with every day that PR people probably don’t let you know because you are talent and they don’t dare risk upsetting you.

That’s just the way things go in our business.

I’m really not trying to be mean, just very honest with you. Every time your company sends out a press release with your name as jessica drake instead of Jessica Drake it looks like that person doesn’t have a basic command of the English language and as a direct result the reflects badly on him.

  6. “hon”,
it’s two-thirds about me. see above. only ONE paragraph out of five referenced the story on illegally downloaded content.

my name is trademarked all lowercase. it is my preference, just as it is yours to spell club “klub”, like i mentioned before. i have been in this business 11 years, and most, if not all, press are familiar with my preference. FANS know as well, and in those 11 years, no one has had a fit over it. as far as people thinking i look stupid, imagine people reading your blog and seeing all the time you spend getting worked up over a little jd. i’ve gotten many emails about it. ; )

if you had simply pointed out your concerns, i wouldn’t have taken it as a personal attack. however, when you say things like:

“I know I personally go out of my way to try and not post press releases when specifically about Jessica Drake just because the whole name thing annoys me to no end.

    LOL”

then you have indeed made it into a personal attack.

i could debate many things in your response, but i’ve already wasted my time posting here twice more than i normally would. if you’d like to continue this and attempt to justify your behavior, you are more than welcome to email me at:

    xxxjessicadrake@hotmail.com

    if not…
    peace,
    jd

ps- as an aside, you are not qualified to know what it is i do best, but thanks for assuming it’s just sex.

  7. My behavior? Wow really? -rolls eyes- This is why people don’t tell talent the truth. They tell them what they want to hear.

And as far as my qualification goes, my years of experience on the business side of things I think more than qualifies me to know what it takes to deal with you or form an opinion on what you do or don’t do … and yes, far more years than you’ve been around.

While it is true, my experience doesn’t mean I know everything, but it more than gives me enough experience in knowing the dumb ass thing some people do.

I love how some people think they know EVERYTHING. You think because you’ve been a porn star for 11 years you somehow now are magically an expert on every other aspect of the industry. REALLY? That’s fascinating. Glad to know it.

Consider my opinion of you now fully formed. Before it was just based on rumors about you, now I can say it’s based on my personal experience.

  8. Just read about this shit on twitter. Is this the same JESSICA DRAKE who went around with a fake id before she signed with Wicked trying to pretend like she wasn’t as old as she is?

  9. Using a fake id and trying 2 lie about her age iz nothing when it comes 2 someone who has been having an affair with a married man.

  10. WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU MAN? DON’T YOU KNOW, PORN CHICKS KNOW EVERYTHING? FUCK GET IT RIGHT ALREADY. ALL DEGREES IN COCK SUCKING COME WITH A FREE MBA AND A BA IN MARKETING ON THE SIDE.

  11. Yes, well the reason I am able to speak to knowledgeably about naming mistakes is that I myself made my own as you so love to point out as if you were revealing some big secret. In 1996 when I picked “Klub” instead of club I made a dumb mistake, make more than 15 years ago. I learned the value of K.I.S.S. with that and I now share what I learned from my own experiences with others.

As far as my identity goes … I don’t know what you are trying to prove by telling others you “outed me”. I’ve discussed it openly on twitter for about 6 months now and even the direct SEO benefits of posting on this site.

But you know hey, who am I to talk about using alias’s. I’m sure you, Jessica Drake don’t do anything like that ever, right?

  12. I don’t want to reveal my name because “jd” is known to be so vengeful against anyone who she perceives crosses her but I did just want to say don’t feel like you need to waste your time trying to defend what you said. She won’t listen. That’s just the way she is. Ask anyone who ever had the displeasure of working on the set with her.

Let’s just say there is a reason why Wicked has less and less contract girls and it has nothing to do with their deal with Brazzers or hurting movie sales.
