Porn in the Digital Age: Why Pay?

Adult Entertainment Industry Reports Low Profits in Face of Free Content, Piracy

(source: ABC News)

If you think the world of pornography is all about sex, you’re only seeing half the picture. At the annual Adult Entertainment Expo trade show and the 2010 AVN Awards, the adult entertainment industry’s version of the Oscars — both held simultaneously in Las Vegas — the business side of porn is in plain view. The Adult Entertainment Expo is a business trade show and porn star-studded festival for fans showcasing the latest in high-tech sex toys and porn mainstays.

Fans are the multibillion-dollar industry’s lifeblood, but in a strange twist, they’re also part of its biggest problem.

“I don’t know how they make money,” said porn consumer Steve Curely. “I’m a cheap bastard. … Why pay when you don’t have to?”

Paul Fishbein, the publisher of Adult Video News, the industry’s largest trade publication, said his business is in trouble.

“The very technology that helped bring the business into the 21st century is also killing it,” he said. “It’s hard to sell to certain consumers when they can get stuff for free.”

It used to be that making money from new technology was the adult industry’s biggest advantage. From VHS and DVDs to the early days of the Internet and even mobile devices, pornographers have led the way in creating capital from new forms of distribution.

But being at the forefront of Internet profit-making has made the industry vulnerable to losses from Internet piracy.

“It’s a huge issue and it’s something that the entire industry is looking at — and not only the adult industry, but I think Hollywood is looking at it as well,” said Steve Hirsch, a top porn producer and founder of Vivid Entertainment.

Hirsch, who has helped make porn mainstream, used to worry about protecting his right to make adult films. Now, he worries about protecting himself from piracy.

“We have two full-time people — all they do is they’re out there on the Internet looking for pirated content,” he said. “When they find it, we send a notice, it comes down, then it goes back up and it’s sort of a cat-and-mouse game.”

Several people ABC News spoke to at the AVN Awards estimated their profits were down 25 percent as a result of piracy and a glut of free content.

“The adult business was the first to figure out how to make money on the Internet, before anybody else. What they didn’t foresee was the availability of all this free content,” Fishbein said. “You can only do so much policing and so much, you know, of the trying to prevent your material from being pirated and shared.”

But as an industry, how do you compete against free content?

“It’s very difficult,” Hirsch said. “Maybe the best way to fight free is with free, but as of now, the economics don’t make sense. You’re not able to get enough advertisers to come in where it would really make sense to give your content away, so the key is high quality content, exclusive stars. If you have that, you can sort of carve out a niche for yourself and people would come to your site.”

Savanna Samson in the Slammer

You don’t her a lot of Vivid girl rumors anymore.  For the most part, the only real Vivid girl rumors that go around would be the ones about them leaving.   In fact, under actual contract in the normal sense the only real Vivid girls would be AJ Bailey and Lia 19.  Savanna Samson is with Vivid still but I think, or at least at one time told her contract was unique.  Sunny Leone now has her own movie production deal and we all know that Monique Alexander, Hanna Hilton and Meggan Mallone left them.  As far as Nikki Jayne goes, nobody really knows.  What we know for sure is she didn’t bother to show up for the AVN show in Las Vegas which is required by all contract girls and nobody has seen her in quite awhile now.

So back to the rumors about Vivid girls.  I have a hell of one for you.  Savanna Samson tweeted on Sunday that she spent the last 20 hours in jail.  She joked about it and really woulnd’t go into detail of what got her in trouble but she did mention it’s never a good idea to threaten to kick a cop in the balls or to tell him you love handcuffs.

this photo is from Savanna Samson’s new movie SCREWED OVER

A few hours later all the tweets were deleted an no mention since has been made of her spending 20 hours in jail.   So for now, let’s just file this under “rumors”.

Vivid Entertainment head of sales Howard Levine has begun a regular blog on XCritic.com, the popular site specializing in reviews, news, interviews, columns, podcasts and a forum.

“We’re excited to have Howard Levine blogging for us. Howard has a unique perspective on the adult industry that could only come from deep, long-term experience. He knows this biz inside and out and we can’t wait to see what he blogs about,” said Chris Thorne, Editor XCritic.com

The first blog by the veteran adult industry sales executive takes readers back to 1985, the first year he began selling adult movies. “Things were a little different back then,” he writes. “Ronald Reagan took the oath of office for his second term. He did not like porn.

The cost of a stamp was 20 cents and the median household income was $28k. Porn wasn’t free on the Internet because the Internet was just getting started…People who ripped off people in the porn business usually paid, quickly. It was a simpler time. You owe, you pay.”

Levine also recalls that “The gay market was shaken up by the death of Rock Hudson, the first big star to die of AIDS. There were no condoms used back then, and frankly no one really cared. We were selling a fantasy. The numbers were good and people bought big time.”

He recalls that the stars of 25 years ago included “Jamie Gillis who crossed over into mainstream movies; Jerry Butler who married Lisa Lorring, a sales person at Caballero who played Wednesday Addams on the Addams Family; John Holmes; Christy Canyon; Amber Lynn; Ginger Lynn; Bridgette Monet; Honey Wilder….and a young girl named Traci Lords. It would be a year before anyone would discover how young Traci actually was. She made 164 or so movies in a very short time, and everyone stocked them. In 1986, everyone would pay dearly.”

In introducing Levine to its readers, XCritic.com notes that in addition to his role as “lead sales guy at Vivid Entertainment” he is an avid motorcyclist.

Eon McKai Leaves Vivid Behind

date
14 January, 2010 Posted By: Ryan Rayzer

Eon McKai scares me. There is no doubt he’s a film making genius but what worries me so much is how seriously illiterate he is. We all make makes typing but I want to share with you something he tweeted recently.

“I never want to see a striped soc agen… no whate… I sitll kinda like stripy sox”. Apparently what he was trying to say was “I never want to see a striped sock again …. no wait, I still kinda like striped socks.”

I know there are people out there who have problems spelling, I mean who the hell can really spell Mississippi without at least running it through spell check. But this is beyond bad spelling. When you don’t know how to spell the word “wait”, that’s something seriously wrong with you. How the hell do you get through elementary school when you can’t spell the words wait or again? SERIOUSLY??!!! How the fuck is that possible?

  • Sure is not spelled “shure”
  • Truth is not spelled “trooth”
  • Official is not spelled “ofishal”

And yet somehow this guy just closed a deal for a kids show for $3.5 million. Seriously? How the fuck?

Anyway the real story I wanted to post about was that today Eon McKai announced he was not going to be doing porn for awhile – he “quits”.  He said he just sold a children’s TV show for $3.5 million and will be working on that for awhile now.

“OK I have to tell the trooth I just sold a kids show for 3.5 mill so porn has to take a brake ;)

To be honest I think this split between Eon McKai and Vivid ALT has been a long time coming. You might have noticed that he stopped pushing VividALT.com as much and instead started promoting his own personal website EonMcKai.com. Not only that but the Vivid ALT movies have started to be shown on the main Vivid website, as if they were starting to bleed out that brand all together.

There have been no updates at all on the Vivid ALT websites since November 12, 2009. It was turn into more of a blog site with all the movies being filtered into the main Vivid.com website.
