Top 50 Most Popular Women Report Flawed

I got a press release today that said Jenna Haze is one of the most popular women in the world and that caught my attention.  Since I make it my business to monitor porn star popularity as part of my full time job, I knew that while it is true Jenna Haze is rather popular, her overall popularity has began to wane in the past year.  She sat perfectly atop the porn star popularity list at Fame Registry for a while, pretty much solid for like 3 years but this year she was replaced by more active performers like Jesse Jane and Sunny Leone.  Of course Sunny Leone’s popularity is in no doubt in large part to her mega popularity in India, which has more than 3 times the population of the United States.

So how is it possible that Jenna Haze makes the the co-ed list (source) as the top 50 most popular women and girls like Sunny Leone and Jesse Jane don’t?

Turns out their website explains just that.  They came up with their own list of 300 people, just any 300 female celebrities they could think of.  Then they ran a “keyword frequency” report for each of the celebs.  Problem is keyword frequency has nothing to do with actual number of searches performed.

Keyword frequency is how often a keyword or keyword phrase (ie:  “Jenna Haze”) appears in a page that is currently in the Google database.   So basically what this means is that at the time the search was performed Google has X pages within their database that includes that keyword.  And even more funny about the magazine’s list for the “year” is that the data they are using isn’t for the year, it’s a number for Google’s database at that exact moment and that number changes greatly from day to day and from month to month.    A celeb can have a keyword frequency of 2 million today, 100 million tomorrow and 150,000 next month.  The Google database really does change that much and that often.  Let me show you what a keyword frequency report looks like.  (see figure below)

Don’t get me wrong, I love Jenna Haze.  I have nothing against her but this list from co-ed magazine is flawed.  While keyword frequency is a valuable SEO metric, it doesn’t exactly give you accurate numbers and it has absolutely nothing to do with the total number of searches done of that performer.  The funny part is, now you have all of these people out there quoting this article on some blog that is absolutely false.

Their report claims that more people Google Lana Del Rey than  Britney Spears and that more people Google Jenna Haze than Shakira.  So how accurate is the report?  Well 673,000 people Google’d Jenna Haze while 11.1 million Googled Shakira.   9,140,000 … that’s 9.1 million people Google’s Sunny Leone while 2.1 million Googled Jesse Jane.

How many people Google’d You Today?

Companies pay search engines like Google money to advertise every time people like me and you search for specific keywords.  The more people per month search a specific keyword or keyword phrase, the more money Google and other search engines can charge that company for that ad.

The interesting part of that whole dynamic is that is also gives us a unique insight into the popularity of your favorite porn stars.   Sites like Fame Registry use this data to help determine the overall popularity of your favorite stars.

So I decided to take a closer look today at the number of searches for some of your favorite stars.  Just curious really how many people really do Google them.  I grabbed some porn stars names which are some of the better known porn stars.   These are all stars we kn ow and love but which of them gets Googled the most?

  • Sunny Leone  – 5,000,000
  • Jesse Jane – 1,220,000
  • Jenna Jameson – 1,220,000
  • Bree Olson – 1,000,000
  • Jenna Haze – 673,000
  • Nikki Benz – 673,000
  • Riley Steele – 450,000
  • Gemma Massey – 246,000
  • Jessica Drake – 201,000

Sunny Leone has been heating up the search engines lately with all of her new found fame over in India.  Between her appearance on the reality show Big Brother, her being cast in I think 2 or maybe 3 mainstream movies over in Bollywood and not one but two different endorsement deals, including one for a cell company over there, you can see why she has so many fans searching their hearts out to find everything they can about her.

Much to my surprise Jesse Jane gets Google’d just as much as Jenna Jameson did … well at least last month.  I’m sure after the whole Jenna Jameson DUI thing her numbers next month will be much higher but at least for now she’s about on part with Jesse Jane.

Next we have the Goddess herself, Bree Olson.  Despite having been out of the media circus for awhile now, she still gets an impressive number of searches each day.

Jenna Haze who has recently dropped in the rankings over at Fame Registry but still ranks very high in overall popularity and is on par in searches with Nikki Benz who was last year’s Penthouse Pet of the Year.

Riley Steele comes in below them with an impressive 450,000 searches a month and below that is British porn sensation Gemma Massey.  Both of them are really the newest performers on the list.  While all the others have years of experience on them, these two young starlets are holding their own with the best of them.

And below all of them is Wicked Contract girl Jessica Drake.  Considering how long she has been with them I’ve very surprised at how low her numbers are.  She’s below Madelyn Marie (who has 301,000 searches last month) who hasn’t been in a single movie or adult promotional event in what … like two years now?  It’s nothing personal … just seems a little off to me.  I just don’t know why her numbers are so low.

So now you know how the top stars rank each month, at least in terms of how many times each day someone goes out there and Google’s them.  Jesse Jane coming in line with Jenna Jameson is a very impressive feat.  A huge congrats to her and all the other stars on the list!  They’ve all done an amazing job at keeping their fans busy wanting more and more of them, which is what gets them Google’d in the first place.

Move over Jenna there is a new porn queen in town!

Sunny Leone Nabs #1 Spot at Fame Registry

For the first time Sunny Leone takes the number one position at porn star ranking site Fame Registry, which is no doubt in large part to the work she has been doing in India.  Recently Sunny Leone was cast in the reality TV show Big Boss, which is one of the most popular reality shows in India which follows the Big Brother format.  She was also cast in a mainstream Bollywood movie which she is currently in India filming.  Prior to this months Fame Registry rankings, Jenna Haze has held the #1 spot for some time.   With Jenna’s recent retirement announcement it will be interesting to see if she is able to regain the number one position or continues to drop down the popularity list in the coming months.

The primary forms of measure include who people are looking for when they search for porn stars using major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Dogpile and Metacrawler. In addition we factor in the popularity of a porn star’s official website, specifically based on total traffic to the site itself and their number of followers and friends a porn star may have on popular social networking sites like Twitter and MySpace.  The popularity rankings are updated once a month which can be seen online at http://www.FameRegistry.com.

Jenna Haze Retires

Jenna Haze, the world’s most famous porn star officially retires from performing.

The most Popular performer of the past decade will now concentrate on directing and more mainstream interests.

Jenna Haze, the most celebrated adult performer this century, has announced her retirement.

One of the top award winners of the past decade, Jenna was AVN’s 2003 Best New Starlet and in 2009 was named Female Performer of the Year by XRCO, XBIZ and AVN, the first performer to ever win the triple crown. She has also received many awards for her individual performances, feature dancing and directing. In 2009 she established her own production company, Jennaration X Studios, and has been producing and directing movies that consistently receive rave reviews. She was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame last month.

“I always said that I would give up performing if I wasn’t going to be into it 100 percent,” she said. “Directing is where my heart is now. It’s allowed me to explore a creative side that is different from what performing has offered me. I am very satisfied with what I was able to accomplish in ten years of performing, and now I’m enjoying the challenges of being on the other side of the camera and running my studio.”

AVN celebrated her 10 year anniversary with a cover story last summer and her final scene was shot not long before that. This month she is featured on the cover of FHM with friend Taylor Momsen. Today she is releasing a video goodbye on her YouTube channel. It can be viewed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CENnskYcBV0.

“I’ve always had a very incredible and dedicated fanbase,” she said. “I’ve been thrilled with the reception to the movies I’ve directed the past three years and I hope they’ll continue watching what I do at Jennaration X. I’m going to give them every reason to.”

The Top 20 Most Google’d Porn Stars

There are a lot of ways to determine the popularity of a porn star.  Some say it should be based on how popular their website is, or how many movies they have been in or how many magazines they have been on the cover of or how many awards they have won.   I personally think that popularity is about the fans.  The more fans you have, the more popular you are.  That makes sense, right?  Well how do you figure out who has the most fans?  A site like Fame Registry helps us do just that.  Each month they produce a variety of reports, one of which tells us which porn stars are most active in terms of searches. So who are the most Google’d porn stars?  Lisa Ann of course!  But what is quite surprising is that Alexis Texas comes in second.  I knew she was rather popular but I didn’t realize that much.

Another big surprise, to me at least, is that new comer Capri Anderson out performers Tera Patrick.

  1. Lisa Ann with 17,072 searches
  2. Alexis Texas with 12,707 searches
  3. Jesse Jane with 12,578 searches
  4. Tori Black with 12,516 searches
  5. Jenna Haze with 11,785 searches
  6. Sasha Grey with 11,155 searches
  7. Eva Angelina with 11,023 searches
  8. Sara Jay with 10,607 searches
  9. Katie Morgan with 9,854 searches
  10. Bree Olson with 9,471 searches
  11. Audrey Bitoni with 9,431 searches
  12. Nikki Benz with 9,121 searches
  13. Shyla Stylez with 8,797 searches
  14. Capri Anderson with 8,414 searches
  15. Carmella Bing with 8,391 searches
  16. Tera Patrick with 8,338 searches
  17. Amy Reid with 8,319 searches
  18. Rachel Starr with 8,105 searches
  19. Kayden Kross with 7,906 searches
  20. Ashlynn Brooke with 7,864 searches

THANK YOU JENNA HAZE FOR SAYING IT

Thank fucking God Jenna Haze said this.  Someone seriously needed to.  It’s annoying seeing porn stars all day long flat out begging for their fans to send them gifts.

JENNA HAZE TWEETS – On Sunday 27th February 2011, @jenxstudios said: #JennaRants Seriously girls? Asking your fans to buy you gifts off a wish list? Really? You realize that you make more money than most of them.. Not only that but you SHOULD be able to buy whatever you want YOURSELF. If you can’t then you are seriously mismanaging your money. All *I* ask from my fans is that they buy my movies (no tube sites!!!) or join my website.

Why do porn stars feel like they need to ask over and over again for gifts from their wish list?  Do they not realize how that makes them look?  Every time I see a porn star tweet about it, I just want to say GET SOME FUCKING SELF RESPECT ALREADY.

Popularity in the porn industry is often fleeting. Some performers experience a meteoric rise and fall in the course of a year. Others connect with the audience on a different level and manage a multi-year ride at the top.  Though there is no real formula for success in this industry, these 12 performers have proven to be more than just a flash in the pan, with tremendous staying power over the past few years. What’s more there are no signs their careers are in danger of waning anytime soon.

So, with the industry’s annual expo underway in Las Vegas Jan. 6-9, we’ve assembled porn’s dirty dozen—the most popular porn stars, based on our reporting and analysis.   By Chris Morris, Special to CNBC.com

Ashlynn Brooke

Brooke has been working in adult films for nearly five years, earning multiple award nominations. She also appeared in last year’s “Piranha 3D,” which has helped escalate her earlier porn films.   These days, however, she’s focusing more on work behind the camera, directing parody-film versions of “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Wonder Woman”.

Jenna Haze

The 28-year-old Haze is arguably the most popular performer in the porn today. She has been nominated for the “Female Performer of the Year” award for three years running at the AVN Awards (porn’s equivalent of the Oscars).   Haze also picked up a similar nomination at the 2009 Xbiz Awards. Meanwhile, she is one of the most popular stars with members of the Adult Entertainment Broadcast Network (AEBN) – the industry’s largest Internet video on demand provider.

Jesse Jane

Jane is, for many, the face of modern porn. She was one of the top-line stars of the smash “Pirates” films (two of the biggest porn movies of all time).   Jane is also hosting this year’s AVN red-carpet ceremony and received performer of the year nods in 2009 and 2010. She’s nominated for the same category in this year’s Xbiz Awards, which she will also host.

Lisa Ann

The 38-year-old Lisa Ann had a run in the 1990s as a porn actress, but quit in 1997, eventually returning as an agent. In 2008, though, her meteoric rise to fame came when she portrayed Sarah Palin in a porn parody. She has since gone on to be one of the most popular on-demand stars with AEBN.

Evan Stone

Ron Jeremy is the industry’s most famous male performer, but 46-year old Stone could be his successor. His sense of humor makes him one of the most popular leading men in the industry among female performers – and fans enjoy a male actor who doesn’t take himself too seriously.

Tori Black

A three-year veteran of the industry with more than 200 films under her belt, Black began as a Penthouse Pet. She won 2010’s AVN performer of the year award and is nominated again in 2011. The story’s the same with the Xbiz Awards. And, like Haze, Black is one of the top stars at AEBN. Among her highlights in 2010 was a spin as Catwoman in Vivid’s incredibly popular “Batman XXX: A Porn Parody”.

Bobbi Starr

A finalist in “America’s Next Hot Porn Star,” Starr failed to win the 2007 pay-per-view reality show, but that hasn’t slowed her rise. She has racked up more than half a dozen awards and may be the industry’s next crossover star, having been cast in the upcoming film “Drive” with Ryan Gosling, Albert Brooks and Christina Hendricks.

Lexi Belle

One of the younger superstars of the industry at 23, Belle has earned top-performer nods for two years running from AVN and Xbiz. She is, perhaps, even more popular with the Web audience, which has made her website one of the biggest in the industry.

Kayden Kross

Kross has been a contract star with both of the production firms Adam & Eve and Digital Playground, making her one of today’s most in demand stars. She will cohost this year’s AVN red carpet with Jesse Jane and is nominated for best performer for the second consecutive year.

Belladonna

While Belladonna appears to be stepping back from performing in porn films, this 29-year old actor/director/producer has one of the most loyal fan bases in the industry. Both straight men and lesbian women have kept Belladonna among the most popular stars – even when she shaved her head. She has been nominated for 42 AVN awards (and won 10) through the course of her career.

Sasha Grey

Grey’s not actively making porn films at the moment, but her push into mainstream acting – including a lead role in Steven Soderbergh’s 2008 film “The Girlfriend Experience”, and a recurring role on HBO’s “Entourage” – has kept her porn works popular. Several companies are also putting out compilation titles with select scenes of her uninhibited past, which fans continue to buy.

Joanna Angel

Like Belladonna, Angel owns her studio – meaning she makes money from sales, not just performances. The punk look she and her actors share has given rise to a new segment in the industry, dubbed alt porn.
