Is Vivid behind with the times?

So I’m in the middle of a debate with a friend of mine about new technologies and the porn industry. I had seen this new thing on Fame Registry about the top porn stars of myspace and now the top porn stars of Twitter.  That is really what had spakred the entire disusion in the first place.  She was going on about Vivid and how great they were, blah blah.  As my eyes started to glaze over listening to her love of all things Vivid I flashed back to the top twitter list and you know what I remember not seeing?  There are no Vivid girls on the Twitter porn star list.  There are all these porno chicks who use twitter like Jesse Jane, Jessica Drake, Sasha Grey, Tori Black, Marie Luv, Teagan Presley, Alektra Blue, Stoya, but not one Vivid girl. There is no Sunny Leone, Meggan Mallone, Nikki Jayne, Savanna Samson, or Hanna Hilton.  There aren’t even any former Vivid girls like Monique Alexander or Lanny Barby.  So if Vivid is so with the times and up on new technology where are all the Vivid girls on Twitter?

It then got me thinking about their use of MySpace.  They really only started using MySpace less than a year ago.  I don’t understand how such an obvious marketing tool took them so long to be a part of but ya it’s true.  Vivid’s MySpace page only came to life a short time ago.   They did temporarily have one posted, but not maintained, it just sort of sat there dead by a contractor some time ago but in the end their use of MySpace really only came about just recently.

And what about other social networking sites like YouTube which screams for some movie trailers?  Despite my best efforts I could find no official Vivid channel however I did find one for Digital Playground.  They have not only movie trailers but not only that, I also learned that Jesse Jane is “the princess of dirty talk” and I even got to watch a video example of why she earned such a title.  Well actually to be fair, I did find a channel claiming to be the official Vivid channel but it was really a dead profile for the most part.  You gotta give it up for Digital Playground and Jesse Jane for the best use of new Internet based technologies for marketing.

jesse-jane

So back to my rant, how is it that my friend justifies Vivid being so great and how they take advantage of new technologies?  Well she just rolled her eyes and wouldn’t finish the argument with me but I’m not really just getting off of my original point.

Where are all the Vivid girls on Twitter?  It’s a little odd that not even one of them are taking advantage of this new technology, don’t you think?

Shay Jordan is now Jasmine Jinn?

Okay so let me get this straight … Shay Jordan is now Jasmine Jinn, well at least that is what I read over at PS Babylon.  How the fuck did this happen?  This is some crazy sounding shit that I had to look into.  I mean why in the world would an established porn star change her name.  That’s marketing suicide.  Surely there has to be a damn good reason behind this.

We know that Shay Jordan started her career as a porn star in last 2005 or early 2006 and signed with Digital Playground in August of 2006 and like most starlets who sign contracts, she seemed to have signed away the rights to her name.  This isn’t however uncommon.  We’ve known this to be common practice dating back for many years now, even as far back as Racquel Darrian with Vivid and that was in the mid 1990s.  Now a decade later this practice is still taking place.   The few times you hear about this kind of thing, it usually ends with the studio releasing the rights to the girls name back to the performer with a few exceptions such as the time Kira Kener sued Vivid after the dissolution of her contract to gain control of the rights to her name.

Teagan Presley was once under contract with Digital Playground and some would have you believe there was some legal issues with her name because the second she left Digital Playground, she started just going by the name of Teagan however Teagan herself went on record as saying that isn’t remotely the case.  While it is true about the trademark, they (as in Digital Playground) has been nothing but supportive of her career and personal circumstances despite the fact that she is no longer under contract with them.  In fact, Teagan Presley will be signing autographs at the Digital Playground booth this year in Las Vegas at the 2009 AEE show.

teagan-presley-aee-2009

So we know that Digital Playground is in the practice, similar to Vivid in gaining control of their contract performers name.  We however also know that like Vivid they tend to have no problems returning the rights to the name once the contract is over, as evident with Teagan Presley. So why this Shay Jordan name change?

Shay Jordan’s MySpace page is clearly run by Digital Playground and they seem to continue to support it and keep it updated despite the fact that she is no longer under contract with them.  That seems odd.

Shay Jordan was in the Pirates II movie but wasn’t as the premier party.

Shay Jordan is now a blonde and being repped by Goldstar Modeling.  Yes the same folks that rep Sunny Leone, Devon, The Love Twins, Gina Lynn.  These guys are showing up a lot lately.

Jasmine Jinn

So I made a few phone calls and here is what I was told.  Yes it is true that Shay Jordan is no longer under contract with Digital Playground.  Yes Shay Jordan is now booking all of her work through Goldstar Modeling.  Yes Shay Jordan changed her name to Jasmine Jinn.  And she did so for practical reasons and that is because Digital Playground owns the rights to the name Shay Jordan and it would be a big legal hassle to try and get it back that could hold up her ability to work under that name.  So there you have it.  That is the reason Shay Jordan is now Jasmine Jinn.

Big Budget gets Beat Out by Low Quality?

There is no denying that Digital Playground spent a shit ton of money on the production and marketing of Pirates II.   I heard rumors about their marketing budget but I don’t know for sure.  Let’s just say if the rumors are true, they spent more money on marketing Pirates II than probably 10 normal movies cost to be made.  Anyway the point is, did all of this hoopla really pay off?  Although the movie remains at the top of the charts but you know what’s selling even better?  A movie thrown together almost overnight and rushed into production.  I’m not saying it’s a low quality piece of shit or anything but let’s be real, as fast as this fucker was made, it couldn’t of exactly had the highest of production values.  Of course I speak of the political spoof, Who’s Nailin’ Paylin from Hustler.  Knowing that your super high budget fuck flick is being outsold by this shit, has to be a sore spot of Digital Playground, who currently has their stars like Jenna Jane traveling the globe promoting the mega hit.  Truth is, by far Pirates II is a better movie.  It’s not just because the girls are hotter, which they are but because it’s clear when watching the movies that the overall production values are better with Pirates II than with Hustler’s Sara Palin political porn.  It’s crap.  They threw it together in 5 minutes and you can see it come through in the scenes of the movie.  I get that the idea was funny.  It really is but I still say Pirates II is a better movie and I hope that is reflected come awards time.

Jenna Leads The Way

With the recent news that Jenna Jameson’s studio (now owned by Playboy) Club Jenna will no longer be producing DVDs, effective almost immediately (to be phased out by the end of this year), it sort of leaves one wondering what is really going on. I spoke to a secret industry insider who has been in the adult video game for more than a decade, he gave me some very insightful information.   He tells me that adult video on demand has been a long time coming.  Here is what else he had to say ….

We started to phase out the sale of VHS in about 2000, and go exclusively DVD. The same movie on DVD, that we once sold on VHS was able to be produced at a $.50 each instead of $1.50. Beyond that, there was also an improvement in the quality of our product so it just didn’t make any sense to continue stocking VHS. It was that same year that everyone began talking seriously about the Internet as a distribution method and some even set goal dates of 2005 to 2010. It was that year that Larry Flynt himself was in Vegas and said something to the effect of, DVD is nice but ADULT VOD is the way of the future. Some idiots laughed him off, sure that DVDs would be around for the next 20 or 30 years. Time would prove Larry Flynt correct.

Club Jenna may be the first major studio (if you can call Club Jenna that) to phase out DVDs but they weren’t the first to think about it or start investing in making it happen.  Studios like Vivid would seriously begin looking into distributing their movies through the Internet this same year.  Through the Vivid website, a member can watch about 800 of the Vivid titles, for one monthly price.

As Internet retailers report in some cases as much as 90% drops in sales, VOD “theaters” that have begun to pop up like AEBN, you can rent thousands and thousands of movies, including all the titles from major studios like Vivid, wicked Pictures and Digital Playground.  Pick the movie you want to watch and download it.  No need for a DVD there and no drop in sales either.  These sites are reporting record growth, despite the sluggish economy.

Truth is, VOD is coming whether we like it or not.   It’s also why you hear rumors like the ones posted at Adult FYI about “secret” meetings by studio heads and other big companies having meetings trying to fix a higher price for current VOD titles.  VOD titles may be cheaper to distribute, but movies still cost money to make and larger studios want a bigger cut per sale.  So what that means is, right now you may be able to get a movie for $7 through those VOD theater websites, but in the future that same movie may cost you $12, that is if these studio heads get their way.

Who knows.  Everything this changing so much right now.  It’s crazy and this Club Jenna thing really just pushed things forward faster than most expected.  With Club Jenna leading the way other studios will follow suit.  It’s al just a matter of time.

DVDs aren’t just out in the porn world either.  Mainstream companies like NetFlix and Blockbuster Online are already toying around with VOD distribution models and by all accounts are having great success with them.

When most assumed the next big thing in porno movies would be hi def or bluray, in reality that’s not a market big enough to invest must time in.   It’s to niche and expensive for most people.  I mean we would all love to be able to afford to pay $70 per movie for the Bluray version, but the reality of the situation is, the economy sucks and people don’t want to pay more for something. If nothing else, we can say that Jenna Jameson may have lead the way for the outing of DVDs, but the economy really is the driving force behind that. People want more porn for less money.

The big question is, with a Internet only distribution model, will studios like Club Jenna still produce quality titles like Jenna Loves Pain 2? Speaking of which, have you seen the movie trailer for Jenna Loves Pain 2? Looks quite interesting. I just so happen to have it for you.

Yar Matey … them there boobies I see over yonder

What do Sasha Grey, Jesse Jane and Jenna Haze all have in common? Well a few things starting with the fact that the threesome are hot as fuck but also the fact that they all three grace the cover of the December 2008 issue of Genesis Magazine.  And oh what a cover shot it is.

DIGITAL PLAYGROUND CONTRACT STAR, JESSE JANE® ADORNS THE COVER OF GENESIS December Issue Features Jesse’s Treasure Plundered by “Pirates II” Costars Jenna Haze & Sasha Grey

October 13, 2008 — VAN NUYS, Calif. — The December 2008 issue of GENESIS magazine is dedicated to Digital Playground’s beautiful contract stars, like Jesse Jane®, and the blockbuster film “Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge”. On the cover, Jesse is the middle of a sexy sandwich with her “Pirates II” costars Jenna Haze and Sasha Grey. Within the pages, the girls pull out the toys and get frisky with each other in one of the hottest threesomes ever. The issue also includes an erotic interview with Jesse Jane, the first published photo shoot and interview with hot new Digital Playground contract girl Riley Steele™, and an exclusive behind the scenes look at the orgasmic set of “Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge”. There is also an amazing contest for fans to win a Blu-ray™ player, a collection of Digital Playground Blu-ray titles, including “Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge”, a cast autographed “Pirates II” movie poster, and a 2-year subscription to the magazine. GENESIS created the most spectacular issue ever to honor the biggest adult production in history, “Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge”.

“It was a no-brainer to dedicate an issue to the phenomenon that is ‘Pirates II’,” says Dan Davis, the Editor-in-Chief for GENSIS magazine. “In our opinion, this movie will go down as one of the best and most successful adult movies of all time as it is an amazing production that surpassed the expectations set forth from the first movie. The exclusive shoot and cover we have with Jesse, Jenna and Sasha is simply incredible, as well as the layout with Riley, and the Blu-ray contest they are sponsoring with us is a great opportunity for any fan. Digital Playground continues to find incredible contract stars, produce quality movies and because of their presence in this issue of GENESIS, we are sure it will be one of the best-selling issues of the year for us.”

Samantha Lewis, Digital Playground’s CEO, loves the December issue of GENESIS. “What an amazing cover and issue. Thank you so much to Dan Davis and GENESIS for providing us with a beautiful tribute to ‘Pirates II’. We thought their idea for a ‘Pirates II’ contest was wonderful and were happy to provide them with a plethora of goodies. ”

“That was one of my favorite photo shoots ever!” exclaims Jesse Jane. “And you know I love covers! It’s always an honor. Even better is to be in GENESIS with two of the sexiest chicks in porn. I will never forget having Sasha on my face and Jenna buried between my legs. I still have a smile.”

A day late and a dollar short?

Recently (as in, on October 8 at 2:13 pm) Tim Case posted on Mike South’s blog that he’s been around so long in this business he has great contacts and one of them told him about the new Digital Playground contract girl and that it will be Angelina Armani (aka the renamed Arianna Armani).

Only thing is, this was speculated about up to 4 days prior and actually revealed the day before.  So how great can your contacts me if you reveal something already known to the public?  I’m not trying to be a dick.  I”m just saying I wouldn’t go around bragging about contacts I had that gave me information that everyone already knows.  Here you have an image posted on a fan message board from the previous day showing the information was so common knowledge it was even on the stars MySpace page already.

To quote him he says “I’ve worked in and around porn for about 8 years now, and I have good contacts.”  That may or may not be true but what we do know is that if you have good information and don’t reveal it until after everyone already knows, then really what is the point?
