We get a lot of emails. Sometimes I go through them, sometimes others do. Mostly they are just crap or press releases zzZZZZZZzzz. But we get some interesting questions and sometimes we get the same questions over and over again. One of the questions we tend to get a lot is how people can get jobs in the porno business. They want to be a porno insider, not really as a performer but to be associated with all the happenings within our industry.
People seem to be under the mistaken impression that even with the economy is in the state that it is, here in porno-land we are still making money hand over first. Well, we aren’t. We struggle just like any other industry does. We are susceptible to the ups and downs of the fiscal cycle just like any other industry does. As far as jobs go, I can’t just wave some wand and magically make you an industry insider, especially if you don’t even live in or near the LA area. It’s just not gonna happen. I’m sorry. But let’s say you do live in or near the happenings of the porn world which is in LA or maybe Miami, mostly LA though.
What are some things you can do to be a porn industry insider? Well believe it or not one of the easiest ways to get your foot in the door is to blog about it. You can contact porn stars via twitter or maybe studios directly and get people to let you interview them then get well known sites or blogs to post your story with your name on them. In time as you build your credibility and reputation for writing interesting interviews, that blog may start to share with you some invites to go to industry specific parties or even on the set of movies to write up a coverage story.
You attend that event as a member of the press, you take notes, snap a few pictures and then go home and write up your story. In time if you continue to do a good job you will no doubt get more and more invites to cover more things and that could in time lead to jobs that actually pay. Because keep in mind up until this point you’ve been doing all of this work for free. Sure you get invited to some cool parties, get to chat with porn stars but you still aren’t really all that well known so you aren’t likely to get paid for what you’ve done up until now.
In time if you do a good job you could probably parlay that into a paying gig but bloggers really don’t tend to make all that much. In fact, I started blogging here myself for free, I was just doing it in exchange for some text links to my own site for the SEO value. That to be was so totally worth the time it took to write a few stories each month.
But what you are doing is cementing your relationships with others in the industry and in time maybe that could lead to paying jobs working for studios or PR firms within the industry, because remember by now you have worked hard (for free mind you) to build a solid, trustworthy relationship.
Maybe by being on the set of various movies, you could get a job as a production assistant. Maybe someone will like your work and offer you to write stories for real magazines. They don’t pay much but it’s possible to make some money doing it.
So there is the answer to your question on how you can become an industry insider. Yes there are other ways but well this covers probably the easiest way. Just remember when contacting people to do interviews BE POLITE AND RESPECTFUL and remember that spell checker is your friend. 🙂
