US music producer Dallas Austin has been released from prison in the United Arab Emirates after receiving a pardon over a drugs conviction, reports say.

"He is on the plane and safely out of the country", Austin’s lawyer Joel A Katz was quoted as saying by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper.

The pardon came directly from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Emir and the country’s vice-president.

Austin was sentenced to four years in jail for having 1.26 grams of cocaine.

The court had also ruled that he should be deported after serving his prison term.

‘Forgot’ drug

He had been arrested at Dubai Airport in May, and claimed he had accidentally brought the drug into the country, having "forgotten" to dispose of it beforehand.

Mr Katz disputed suggestions Austin had been attending the birthday party of supermodel Naomi Campbell.

He told the AP news agency the producer was seeing music concerts instead.

Austin has several hit songs to his credit, having worked with acts including Michael and Janet Jackson, Madonna and Boyz II Men.

He also won the Grammy Award for best R&B album in 1999 for producing TLC’s multi-platinum release Fanmail.
