WOMAN CHARGED WITH FELONY SEX ASSAULT

A 20-year-old Rutland woman is facing charges for allegedly providing alcohol and cigarettes to three teenage boys and having sexual contact with them.

Heather J. Lyman, 20, is expected to be in Rutland District Court this morning to be arraigned on four felony charges of sexual assault on a person under the age of 16, and one misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of minors.

Each felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

The charges are a result of an investigation by Rutland City Police that began in late-April after police received a report that Lyman allegedly was having oral sex with the teenage boys, one age 14 and the other two 15, and providing them alcohol and cigarettes at her house.

"This information was learned after the juveniles were caught lying to their parents about where they were staying," city police Detective David Notte wrote in a police affidavit.

The boys then reported to police that Lyman had oral sex with them at different times, according to the affidavit. The alleged incidents took place between September 2005 and April 2006 in the Rutland area, the affidavit stated. The boys reported that there was no force involved, the detective wrote.

Police also questioned Lyman about the allegations, and she agreed to talk to the detective, according to the affidavit.

"She related she did it because she wanted their friendship and if she did not do it, she felt they would not want to be around her anymore," Notte wrote in the affidavit. "Lyman further advised she knew the juveniles ages, but did not know it was illegal to perform oral sex on them. She thought it was illegal to have intercourse."
