FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) _ A former bank executive who stripped naked and accosted an off-duty female police officer while she was jogging last spring has been sentenced to 364 days in jail.
John D. Kelly, 40, jumped out from behind some bushes on the Henry Hudson Trail in Union Beach wearing nothing but a condom and followed the unidentified officer. She threatened Kelly with pepper spray while calling police.
Kelly, a former vice president at J.P. Morgan Chase in New York, put on a pair of shorts and ran away barefoot, but the officer chased him and called in his license plate number to authorities.
Kelly was arrested May 19, a day after the attack. He pleaded guilty in February to a single count of attempted sexual contact. He’ll also serve five years’ probation and is subject to the provisions of Megan’s Law, Superior Court Judge Anthony J. Mellaci ruled Friday.
The former banking executive is an admitted sex addict who has been through intense therapy. During the hearing, Kelly apologized to the victim and said he was ready to take responsibility for his actions.
But Mellaci disagreed, citing a golf vacation that Kelly took right after the incident and separate arrests in Arizona in 1984 and 1996 for similar acts.
"I don’t know that I’m satisfied you will be cured," Mellaci said.
