Detention center workers appear in court on sex scandal charges

Indianapolis – Ten workers inside the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center have been charged in a number of crimes, including having sex with minors inside the lock-up. On Wednesday they answer those charges in court.

On Monday, three more former detention center workers were arrested. Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi announced charges in the case on Monday, which totaled 52 in all against the ten accused workers. The girls involved were between the ages of 13 and 15 when the alleged contact took place.

Former youth manager Kelly Stewart surrendered to police Monday night, and police have also arrested Dannarris Harvey, another youth manager, Tuesday morning. Harvey faces official misconduct, criminal confinement and sexual battery.

The center’s superintendent, Damon Ellison, has also been charged with obstruction of justice and neglect of a dependent. He’s suspended without pay and he has been ordered to stay away from the detention center, his job for the last 12 years.

Crime beat reporter Steve Jefferson is at the City-County Building in downtown Indianapolis for a live report at noon. This story will be updated shortly.
