A former Qantas steward has been sentenced to a 12-month intensive corrections order, after pleading guilty to child pornography charges in a Melbourne court.
In the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court, Sunbury man William Jansen was also placed on the sex offenders register.
The 33-year-old was charged with possessing, manufacturing and transmitting child pornography after getting caught in online chats with an undercover police officer posing as a 13-year-old girl.
His lawyer, Michael Kuzilny, says Jansen will have intensive counselling to sort his life out.
“It’s appalling behaviour and I think Billy’s learned out of these serious mistakes and hopefully he can find his way and move on,” he said.
Mr Kuzilny says that while Jansen has not been sentenced to jail time, he is still being severely punished.
“The intensive corrections order involves 12 hours of mandatory work each week and also intense counselling, so it’s certainly a very intrusive and a demanding order, and a very stressful order,” he said.
“If a person doesn’t comply with all those conditions, or doesn’t turn up for work, the law then says the rest of the time has to be spent in custody.”
Since his guilty plea, Jansen has lost his job at Qantas and his pregnant wife has left him, taking their 10-month-old son.
Jansen says his involvement in child pornography has hurt the people closest to him.
“I just apologise to the community and my family and everyone that what I did was an abhorrent thing,” he said.
“I don’t recommend anyone gets involved in child pornography.”

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS — An Altamonte Springs man was charged Monday with one count of promoting sexual performances by a child and 20 counts of possessing child pornography.Monrovia I. McKenzie, 42, who listed his occupation as a cook, was being held in the Seminole County Jail with bail set at $10,000.
A spokeswoman for the state Attorney General’s Office said McKenzie had been under investigation from about the time that office established a cyber-crime unit in November. He is the 11th person arrested by the unit.State investigators found pornographic videos on the Internet and traced them back to McKenzie, Attorney General’s Office spokeswoman JoAnn Carrin said.
The films also were found on McKenzie’s computers Monday, and he admitted to knowingly possessing pornography, Carrin said. Agents seized the computers along with more than 500 digital images and videos.

NEWPORT man Jay Wilson, 27, was last week sentenced to six months’ jail, suspended for 18 months, on child pornography charges.Wilson was charged with possessing and producing child pornography after police searches revealed thousands of illicit images stored on his computer.
He pleaded guilty to both charges.
Magistrate John Doherty also ordered Wilson to complete 100 hours unpaid community work and be assessed and treated as part of a community-based order.
Mr Doherty ordered that Wilson be registered as a child sex offender and report to police for the next eight years.
