Conservatives, Porn Industry On Same Side

FROM WRAL.COM

Two Democratic senators want to wall in a virtual red-light district on the Internet.

Sens. Max Baucus of Montana and Mark Pryor of Arkansas have introduced legislation calling on the Bush administration to create a new Internet domain exclusively for pornography.

They want Internet pornography segregated from other Web content in a .XXX domain.

The lawmakers said putting porn in one place would make it easier for parents and others to filter Web-browsing access. Baucus likens it to cities zoning for adult stores.

Pornographic Web sites would be required to relocate there, ideally consolidating them all in one Internet neighborhood.

But it’s unclear whether the measure would win wide support. The legislation may be hard to pass. Ironically both Christian conservatives and the pornography industry are in the same bed on this one, politically.

They both oppose the bill, though, obviously, for different reasons.

The Free Speech Coalition, one of the nation’s largest adult entertainment trade groups, calls the idea "ghettoization" and says it could be unconstitutional.

The conservative groups Focus on the Family, Family Research Council and others at least temporarily blocked creation of a .XXX domain last year by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. So many complaints were received that ICANN put off a final decision on creation of the domain.
